Ha harr! Eleanor and Alasdair read Treasure Island by the Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, who is Scottish. Treasure Island is a tale of deadly danger and dubious male role models — basically like social media today. It's a very famous story, but is it actually good? Will Jim Hawkins's adventure buckle your swashes? And is fifteen men on a dead man's chest just good maritime fun? Or a health and safety nightmare?

When I was a kid I thought Silver was a “bad guy”. As an adult, I’m not so sure. Most British ships heading for the Americas sailed out of Bristol, and 90% of them were engaged in the slave trade. Choosing between that and piracy, I don’t know that piracy is worse. The fact that Silver’s wife is mixed race, that he is didn’t drink away all his earnings, and he tried to prevent killing anyone makes him morally ambiguous and interesting.
